Following a proposal made by the Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia and supported by Argentina, Azerbaijan, Ecuador, Georgia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared 2013 "International Year of Quinoa".

The purpose of this statement is to focus the world attention on the role played by the quinoa on biodiversity, and on its nutritional value in the food and nutrition security as well as the eradication of poverty in order to support the achievement of the internationally agreed development including the Millennium Development Goals.

The Istituto Italo - Latino Americano - IILA, the Embassy of the Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia and the Società Italo-Latinoamericana di Etnomedicina - SILAE combine the efforts undertaken by FAO in this area, supporting various initiatives aimed to spread awareness of its quality nutrition in Italy. The realization of this Conference "Conociendo el grano de oro de Los Andes: la Quinua", is designed for this purpose.

The IX Italian Congress of Food  Chemistry (ChimAlSi_2012) took place in  Ischia, Italy, on 3-7 June 2012. The Congress with the theme "Food, Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals"  was attended by 350 participants. The ChimAlSi_2012 was a  hallmark event, signifying a considerable shift  in research interest from food chemistry  composition and analysis towards functional  foods and nutraceutics and their role in disease  prevention and health promotion.
