This is an ISHS international scientific symposium, scheduled for Monday through Wednesday, June 17 through 19, 2013 at the Montreal Botanical Gardens in the City of Montreal, Quebec. The symposium will provide a unique opportunity for understanding and appreciating the latest scientific knowledge on medicinal plant and natural products. Scientific sessions in Pharmacognosy, Ethnobotany, and Ethnopharmacology will focus on the new scientific development in sciences.

Following a proposal made by the Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia and supported by Argentina, Azerbaijan, Ecuador, Georgia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared 2013 "International Year of Quinoa".

The purpose of this statement is to focus the world attention on the role played by the quinoa on biodiversity, and on its nutritional value in the food and nutrition security as well as the eradication of poverty in order to support the achievement of the internationally agreed development including the Millennium Development Goals.

The Istituto Italo - Latino Americano - IILA, the Embassy of the Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia and the Società Italo-Latinoamericana di Etnomedicina - SILAE combine the efforts undertaken by FAO in this area, supporting various initiatives aimed to spread awareness of its quality nutrition in Italy. The realization of this Conference "Conociendo el grano de oro de Los Andes: la Quinua", is designed for this purpose.
